Planning Partner, Nigel Hewitson, Shares Another Top Tip For Listed Buildings

Davitt Jones Bould planning partner and listed buildings expert, Nigel Hewitson, has co-authored the sixth edition of Listed Buildings & Other Heritage Assets.

The book is a comprehensive overview of UK law as it related to the historic environment. In it he shares his top tips for private sector occupiers:

''Even if works were done by someone else (such as a predecessor in title – which you may not even have been aware of when you bought the property – I can’t overemphasise the importance of due diligence on listed buildings!) you could be required by the local planning authority to put them right (potentially at great expense). Where a breach of listed building control comes to light there is no time limit on the issue of a listed building enforcement notice which can require the restoration of the building to its previous state or works to alleviate the effects of the unauthorised works. Failure to comply is a criminal offence for which the maximum sentence is an unlimited fine.''
