From the 10th-21st of November the 30th annual United Nations climate meeting took place in Belém Brazil. Our head of ESG Chris Kerr comments:
COP30 marks the ten-year anniversary of the Paris Agreement, which of course committed nations to keep the rise in global temperatures to 1.5°C and well below 2°C. Recent reviews, including the Global Stocktake, have shown nations are way off the mark in achieving this, however. In fact, the “State of Climate Action 2025” report, prepared by the World Resources Institute, found that climate action has not materialised in any sector at the level required to achieve the goals set out in the Paris Agreement. There will be an expectation that the Parties deliver some ambitious strategies and announcements at this years COP, although after the overall disappointment of COP29, many will be wary of being too optimistic in that regard.
However, with recent international court rulings (ICJ, IACtHR) underscoring that states have a due diligence obligation to regulate emissions and safeguard human rights from climate harm, inaction is no longer a policy choice, it is a breach of international law. Corporate entities and legal practitioners alike must recognise that climate risk is a material financial and liability risk. COP30 is a critical juncture for translating global imperatives into actionable, legally binding domestic frameworks and robust corporate accountability mechanisms. We will of course keep you up to date on all that is relevant.
